Most Veterinary traditional treatments will include NSAIDs - Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs.  Treatment will depend on several factors including your dog's age, heath, severity of the defects and the costs of treatment.

Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

Conventional medical treatment for canine hip dysplasia involves corticosteroids or non-steroidal medications and may include the following:

NSAIDs such as Rimadyl, Previcox, Metacam etc help relieve pain and inflammation. 

While NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) stops the pain quickly, it does NOT prevent canine hip dysplasia damage to the joints and may even inhibit healing of the cartilage, further destroying the cartilage and joint components if used over a long period of time. 

NSAIDs may also cause stomach ulcers and internal bleeding and even death.  They should only be use for short term pain relief - but Hip Dysplasia and Arthritis is a looong-term disease.

Acetaminophen treats mild to moderate pain in osteoarthritis.

It has no anti-inflammatory properties and is purely for pain relief. It can be used safely in conjunction with NSAIDs. Too much of this medicine can cause liver damage.

Corticosteriods or steriods for short are anti-inflammatory and analgesic pain relieving medications similar to NSAIDs.

They are very effective medication if your dog suffers from extreme pain or when they fail to respond to NSAIDs.  However the negative side effects of corticosteriods is that they are immuno suppressive and may also contribute to the destruction of your pet's joints by decreasing collagen and proteoglycans synthesis in cartilage.

Or they get operated on in very severe cases.

What about molecular weight and Mammalian vs Marine Chondroitin or Glucosamine?

You must have seen the selling punchline on some of these joint formulation products stating that their Chondroitin and/or Glucosamine is of a lower molecular weight (usually between 7 and 10 kDa) which gives their product the ability to be rapidly absorbed into the body. 

This is true.  But they also neglect to inform you that these GAGs are also very quickly excreted from the body.  Therefore, ideally you would need to take the product more often and in higher doses in order to achieve some visable result, making them in true terms, very expensive and not as effective as Sashas Blend. 

Not as effective?   Let me explain:  Sashas Blend's science included a digestion simulation to see how our GAGs survive the Gastrointestinal (GI) Tract and what effect it has on the GI Tract.  In this we also looked at bioavailability of the molecules and what size molecule is the joint best able to accept and absorb.  We found that a damaged joint can accept a molecular weight of up to 50kDa. 

What did we do?  We removed all molecules larger than 50kDa and kept all other molecules inside in the formulation.  That is why Sashas Blend is able to work so quickly and stay in the body so much longer making it so much more effective.

Some symptoms to watch out for which may indicate the your dog has painful joints.
